Chemistry set that matters

$5 chemistry setIn keeping with our previous post about Hornby, here’s another toy-related story. Researchers have developed a $5 chemistry set, that uses the old-school technology of hole-punched paper tape to program a device that then dispenses various chemicals on demand.

Unlike the chemistry sets of my youth (yes, I am a science geek) this one also has some grander aspirations… it has been developed in an attempt to encourage science education and perhaps even cheap diagnostics in developing countries.

Is there also an opportunity to utilise a product such as this to not only teach kids in more affluent communities about science and technology but encourage discussion about international affairs and the complexities of the world we live in?
