Suppliers share the burden..or benefit

Good Business Message

Working with suppliers to ensure employees, wherever they may live, receive a fair go, isn’t only the right thing to do, it can provide a solid boost to your reputation and top line.

Update March 2015: Almost another year has passed since the Rana Plaza disaster in Bangladesh and finally Benetton has committed to contribute to the compensation fund. However, it’s still under fire from campaigners for delaying the process and dallying over a decision about how much to contribute. In spite of some brands reluctance to move on, others recognise the importance to both society and their brand of providing fair working conditions and are contributing positively to the discussion.

A year on from the Rana Plaza collapse, many brands still seem to be passing up the opportunity to do the right thing and, at the same time, benefit from a reputation booster.

This issue is close to my heart and the tragedy all too well etched in my memory. I spent 7 months living and working in Savar, the suburb of Dhaka where the Rana Plaza was located, and it’s more than a little frustrating to read, according to the Clean Clothes Campaign , that many brands are yet to cough up.

Primark appears to be the brand that has committed the most effort to the long-term recovery of survivors and families, and the clothes retailer is driving growth of it’s parent company ABF with a 26% increase in EBIT…coincidence??
